Aussie Cafés Abroad
Australian cafés can be found around the world, from New York and London to Budapest, Tokyo, and Mexico City. Journalists and a few scholars have taken note of their existence, but no one has yet examined Australian cafés systematically as a global phenomenon. As a result, important questions remain unanswered.
Why do these cafés exist at all, and what explains their locations around the globe?
How do Australian cafés abroad compare to their counterparts in Australia?
How do they interpret and portray Australia to the world?
Might these far-flung private businesses offer Australia a source of soft power?
To answer these questions, I’m mapping the presence of Australian cafés around the world and collecting the stories of the people who established them.
